Angéline Lafleur, a current Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) PhD student has been named one of 14 recipients of the Order of the White Rose scholarship valued at $50,000. Lafleur is a former participant of IQC’s Quantum School for Young Students (QSYS)Undergraduate School on Experimental Quantum Information Processing (USEQIP), and has been active in volunteering for the institute.

The scholarship is administered by Polytechnique Montréal in honour of the 14 women, mostly engineering students, who were murdered by a lone gunman in an act of gender-based violence in 1989.

“It is a great honour to be named one of the 14 recipients of the Order of the White Rose scholarship this year; a number profoundly meaningful, honouring the 14 young women who lost their lives in pursuit of their dreams of becoming engineers. The Order of the White Rose is much more than financial support. It is a symbol of the resilience of women in engineering, and it is a true inspiration to persevere and make a difference in the world.”
- Angéline Lafleur, PhD candidate, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Quantum Information

At IQC, Lafleur’s research is in quantum metrology. Her co-supervisors are Dr. David Cory and Dr. Guo-Xing Miao, professors in the Department of Chemistry and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, respectively.

Her work focuses on developing more accessible quantum-precise voltage standards.

“I want to work on taking cool quantum phenomena and turning them into useful technologies,” Lafleur says. “The expertise, resources, and connections at IQC make it an ideal place to accomplish this goal and to have a real impact on Canada's growing quantum ecosystem.”
