Handle with quantum care

Researchers from the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) and the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo have developed a universal method to manipulate quantum systems while minimizing their exposure to noise. Unlike related control methods that are designed for a particular physical setting, this new method is universal and can be applied regardless of the type of experimental set-up.

Their conversation went on to seed a social media sensation that garnered headlines around the world.

Imagine a movie showing particles in a gas moving and colliding with each other. Then when you play the movie backwards the velocity of the particles will be opposite, but their motion is still governed by the same laws of physics – we could just as well call the backwards film “forward” – there is no fundamental way to distinguish the arrow of time. This is called time-reversal symmetry.

Entanglement is an extremely strong correlation that can exist between quantum systems. These correlations are so strong that two or more entangled particles have to be described with reference to each other, even though the individual objects may be spatially separated.

It has been shown that even if two uncorrelated quantum systems that don’t know anything about each other can still become entangled in a quantum vacuum without being limited by the speed of light.

Researchers from the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) have, for the first time, converted the colour and bandwidth of ultrafast single photons using a room-temperature quantum memory in diamond.
