Term and Year of offering: Fall 2015
Course Number and Title: MSCI 760 Sustainability Management (MMSC Online)
Instructor’s Name: Dr. Minna Allarakhia
Course Description: See description in the Graduate Calendar
Sustainable enterprises use innovation and advanced technology to build ventures and create products that support long-term economic growth with an awareness of economic, environmental and social concerns—the triple bottom line. The course presents major issues and trends affecting both developed and emerging markets including the need for sustainable product and process development to address energy and resource use, pollution, climate change, market disparities, and personal/consumer behaviour change.
Through case studies students will have the opportunity to evaluate the sustainability practices of organizations across sectors and markets. Through simulation exercises students will learn about effective change management within organizations, how to design sustainable products and how consumer behaviour modification is needed to support sustainability initiatives.
In a single-player change management simulation, students play one of two roles at a sunglass manufacturing firm and face the challenges associated with implementing an organization-wide environmental sustainability initiative. The initiative seeks to change raw material inputs in order to make the company's products more "green," and also to address environmental waste issues. The simulation includes up to four scenarios with different combinations of two important factors for creating change: the relative power of the change agent and the relative urgency associated with the change initiative. In each scenario, students choose among different change levers in an attempt to persuade key members of the organization to adopt the change initiative. Students are assessed on their ability to achieve the greatest percentage of adopters within the company while simultaneously using the fewest resources.
