In January 2025, several management engineering students took part in the IISE Regional Student Conference, hosted by Laval University in Quebec City. The conference featured insightful speaker sessions, interactive networking events, and a variety of competitions. The experience provided students with valuable opportunities to develop their skills, expand their professional networks, and grow both academically and personally.
Management engineering students made a strong impact at the IISE conference, securing 3rd place overall out of nine competing universities.
A team of five students 4th year students (Aniq Premji, Larissa Troper, Matthew Chan, Sunischit Thapa, and Adel Pazoki) took 1st place in the Technical Paper Competition. Their paper was based on their capstone design project, which is focused on improving operating room scheduling at Cambridge Memorial Hospital. The team is working under the supervision of Profs. Houra Mahmoudzadeh and Hossein Abouee Mehrizi.
Another team - Kirti Bansal, Dhruv Sharma, Ana Hogiu, Achchala Deepan, and Gustavo Ayub Ungaretti - came 1st place in IISE’s first Capsize competition, demonstrating their ability to think strategically under pressure.
Finally, the Simulation Team of Carter Ibach, Thomas Kleinknecht, and Agishan Thaya secured a 3rd place finish, applying their analytical skills to tackle complex modeling challenges.
Their success follows a very successful participation at the 2024 competition. The Waterloo IISE team was advised by Prof. Oliver Schneider.
