Term and Year of offering: Winter 2016

Course Number and Title:  MSCI 607 Applied Economics for Management

Instructor’s Name:   Bon Koo

Course Description: See description in the Graduate Calendar

Course Objectives:

This is a core course that all incoming Master and Ph.D. students of the Department of Management Science and Engineering should take. This course will examine the basic concepts and analytical tools of economics that are useful to managers in the changing business environments. Primary focus is on microeconomics or managerial economics, and the main topics include the theory of demand and supply, production and cost of firms, market structure (competition, oligopoly, and monopoly), game theory, externalities, asymmetric information, etc. The course will try to integrate theories with real world problems.

Required Readings, Materials and Texts:

• The main textbook for this course is Managerial Economics and Strategy (1st ed. 2014, Pearson Addison Wesley) by Jeffrey M. Perloff and James M. Brander. This textbook is different from the book used in previous years. The main topics of this textbook are similar, but you will be confused if you use the previous textbook.

• This course covers the basic concepts and theories, and thus I will try to follow the textbook as closely as possible. I expect you to have this textbook throughout the term.
