The Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy is pleased to host Umar Waqas, Director of Engineering Services for Energy+ Inc. on April 24.
His presentation, "Utility of the Future – Perspective from a Local Distribution Company" is open for all to attend. The electricity sector is expected to undergo an unprecedented amount of change which has implications for utility shareholders, private markets, and end customers. This change is driven through technological improvements, cost reductions in alternative sources, and changing consumer preferences. The perspective from a Local Distribution Company looks at the opportunities this presents for shifting the conventional poles/wires business to a service organization that empowers customers to part-take in the sector and become involved in making sustainable decisions. The uncertainties that come with change are discussed to provide the audience an appreciation of the technical and regulatory challenges that impact decision making.

The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples. Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is centralized within our Office of Indigenous Relations.
