Tuesday, June 23, 2026

A newly minted mechanical engineering alum has received three awards for his academic excellence.

Matthew Gordon (BASc ‘26) received the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers (CSME) Gold Medal, the Alumni Gold Medal, and the Sandford Fleming Medal for academic excellence, all awarded to students who achieve top academic standing in their graduating class.

Matthew developed an interest in aerospace at a young age and was determined to pursue it as a career. Throughout his time as an undergrad, he led operations for Waterloo Rocketry and completed co-op terms at internationally recognized space organizations to further his skills in the industry.

Each year, participating institutions award medals to students who consistently demonstrate strong academic performance throughout their program and who graduate with the top cumulative average in their department.

During convocation, Matthew was also the recipient of the Alumni Gold Medal, another medal, this time by the University of Waterloo, that also recognizes the academic achievements of graduating students. In addition, he was also awarded the Sandford Fleming Foundation Medal for academic excellence at the department’s capstone awards ceremony.

Congratulations, Matthew, and best of luck in your endeavours!
