DR. GERALD E. SCHNEIDER WINS AIAA 2013 THERMOPHYSICS AWARD

Honored for a Variety of Accomplishments in the Field of Heat Transfer

November 14, 2013 – Reston, Va. – Dr. Gerald E. Schneider, AIAA associate fellow, and professor, mechanical and mechatronics engineering, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, won The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ (AIAA) 2013 Thermophysics Award. He received the award at an awards luncheon held in conjunction with the 21stAIAA Computational Fluid Dynamics Conference and its co-located conferences, 24 – 27 June, at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel, San Diego, Calif.

Schneider was honored for “outstanding, pioneering, and sustained contributions in developing simple and advanced numerical methods for computational heat transfer, algebraic equation solvers, phase change energy transport, all-speed flows, and conduction heat transfer.”

Schneider’s many contributions to the field of thermophysics include: the reduction of computational times by orders of magnitude through use of his modified strongly implicit solution procedures; being the founder of control-volume based finite element methods of heat transfer analysis used by individuals and commercial software; his algorithm for solid/liquid phase change analysis, that reduced the computational requirements by two orders of magnitude; and for being the originator of the momentum variable approach that enables a single algorithm/code to be used for flows from purely incompressible flows to strongly hypersonic flows. Schneider has published over 200 papers, including 67 journal articles, examining all areas of thermophysics.

Schneider has been a member of the AIAA Thermophysics Technical Committee (Thermophysics TC) since 1974, serving as chair of the committee from 1998 to 2000. He was also associate editor of AIAA’s Journal of Thermophyics and Heat Transfer from 1986 to 1993. Schneider has also served on the AIAA Board of Directors in various roles, including as regional director of Region VII from 2001 to 2007. He has also been a member of AIAA’s Publications Committee, Membership Committee, and the Pendray Literature Award committee. Schneider was a finalist in the Canadian Space Agency’s search for Canadian astronauts in 1982, 1983, and 1992.

Schneider was a 2007 recipient of an AIAA Special Service Citation, for his leadership of AIAA Region VII, and a 2003 AIAA Sustained Service recognizing his service to the Thermophysics TC.

The AIAA Thermophysics Award recognizes a singular or sustained technical or scientific contribution by an individual in thermophysics, specifically as related to the study and application of the properties and mechanisms involved in thermal energy transfer and the study of environmental effects on such properties and mechanisms.
