Mike Collins the new 2021 Chair of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering
Long-time faculty member Mike Collins became the new chair of mechanical and mechatronics engineering (MME) at the beginning of January.

The selection process included voting by the department’s faculty and staff members and Mike’s understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within MME.

Born in Newfoundland, he attended Memorial University for a bachelor's in mechanical engineering and Queen’s University for his master’s and doctoral degrees.

Mike has 19 years of teaching experience at the University of Waterloo and tenure as associate chair of undergraduate studies, which have helped solidify his ability to navigate his MME team on their collective journey.

With his typical affable Maritime personality and authentic approach to all things he involves himself in, Mike has gained the respect of students, staff, and faculty alike.  Through the encouragement of his family since a young age, Mike has been able to pursue his childhood dream of working in the engineering field, and is now leading the largest mechanical and mechatronics department in the country.

Congratulations Mike, the department looks forward to your continued leadership and support.
