At the annual Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers (CSME) conference, a capstone project team received national recognition for developing a robot that helps train professional volleyball players and teams. The robot delivers repeatable, game-like sets, allowing athletes to practice without relying on another player to assist with training.
Team Onset entered their project in the CSME National Design Competition and won an award for the technical excellence of their design.
Each year, students from across Canada submit both capstone and non-capstone projects to the competition for national recognition and cash prizes.
The project also won the Most Innovative Project Award, sponsored by Dyson, at the department’s annual awards ceremony. This award highlights the team’s creativity and forward-thinking approach.
The team is made up of mechanical and mechatronics engineering students who have just graduated. The members are Grace Liang, Kevin Gong, Vincent Nguyen, and Austin Lew.
