MME PhD candidates receive the Niessen-Teck Award 2022

Congratulations to Ali Ghatei-Kalashami and Bersu Bastug Azer for winning the Paul Niessen-Teck Award on behalf of Teck Metals Ltd. (former Cominco). This award consists of a medal and $2,000 awarded annually to one or two students who demonstrate leadership and skill in the Materials Science and Manufacturing Laboratories of the MME Department.

This award is in memory of Professor Paul Niessen, a distinguished member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering who had a long association with Cominco Ltd. Candidates of this award should be enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering graduate program in the year preceding the award and nominations are submitted to the Chair of Mechanical Engineering in January of each year.

Ali Ghatei-Kalashami is a PhD candidate supervised by Norman Zhou of MME. Ali’s PhD project is on “Fundamentals of liquid metal embrittlement cracking in the Fe-Zn system’” and demonstrated outstanding leadership with an exceptional publication record.  

Bersu Bastug Azer is a PhD candidate co-supervised by Michael Pope of Chem Eng and Mustafa Yavuz of MME. Bersu’s PhD project is on “Titanium dioxide electrocatalysts for sensors in water treatment and biosensing” and demonstrated excellent leadership and impressive potential.
