MME PhD student named a Vanier scholar for 2025

Thursday, July 10, 2025

Ahmed Shahin, a PhD student in mechanical and mechatronics engineering, has received the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship—one of the top graduate scholarships in the country. The award is presented to exceptional graduate students. It is valued at $50,000 per year for up to three years, supporting doctoral students who demonstrate strong research potential, leadership, and academic excellence.

Ahmed's research is based on building low-cost, highly selective gas sensors that could have a high impact on food safety, air quality, and could detect disease through breath analysis. There are sensors available at the current moment, but they’re not sensitive enough and struggle in real world conditions and can be expensive to manufacture. Ahmed is harnessing a newer manufacturing process called Atmospheric Pressure Spatial Atomic Layer Disposition (AP-SALD). The research is supported by MME supervisor, Dr. Kevin Musselman and ECE professor Dr. Na Young Kim.

Ahmed’s goal is to take his research and put it out into the real world. He hopes to translate it into a start-up after he concludes his studies.
