MME unveils its first welding lab

Monday, November 24, 2025

The Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering recently unveiled its first welding lab, making it a first for the University of Waterloo.

The new lab, made possible by the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) and internal investment, is named the CWB Undergraduate Welding Lab in honour of Hugh Kerr, former Chair of the MME department, who launched the Welding and Joining Specialization Program in 1998 with CWB and industry support.

With this new on-site lab, our students can complete their work on campus rather than in rented facilities off campus. Additionally, the new space is equipped with top-notch tools, systems, and equipment for year-round course instruction that aligns with current and future industry needs (with more to come from our trusted partners). It’s also worth noting that the lab supports hand laser welding training—the first university in Canada to offer this option in an undergraduate welding curriculum.

The lab is also designed not only to support students who use it but also to showcase welding and joining as a rewarding career path to prospective students and current Waterloo Engineering students.
