It’s hard to imagine how Mariko Shimoda had time to become an engineer with all of her community involvement. The Mechanical Engineering graduate (BASC ’20) clearly excels and can juggle a lot and do it well - she was hired full-time by her co-op placement.
Over the past five years, Shimoda participated in the following volunteer roles:
- Active with the Waterloo Undergrad Student Association as the co-op and experiential affairs commissioner
- External director for the University’s Racial Advocacy for Inclusion, Solidarity and Equity (RAISE) group
- Supported the Faculty of Engineering as an academic representative serving as the voice of mechanical engineering – in a number of roles
- Many Engineering Society (EngSoc) roles including the first-year commissioner, vice-president of student life and president
- Led outreach programs for children at THEMUSEUM
- Took part in the Toronto Pride Parade
- Helped at the Food Bank of Waterloo Region
- Ran several mental health initiatives – wrote a mental health blog and developed a mental health resource guide
- A member and volunteer of Women in Engineering (WiE)
- Community peer leader at WiE’s Living-Learning Community
Last Fall, she was one of two recipients to receive a Community Leader Award through the President’s Community Impact Awards initiative.
She was hired by Clearpath Robotics - a Waterloo Engineering graduate led company and supporter of Engineering.
Thank you, Mariko Shimoda for your contribution to Mechanical Engineering, the University of Waterloo, and the community. We are very proud of you!
