Through the Arts First program, the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Arts provides a wide spectrum of courses each term with an emphasis on developing inquiry and communication skills. First-year students have an opportunity to explore a variety of topics based on a professor’s expertise, with each course taught in a small seminar setting where students build social awareness and ethical engagement. These courses are often a gateway to learning about potential majors students might pursue, including Grebel’s programs such as Music, Peace and Conflict Studies, Mennonite Studies, and Religious and Theological Studies.

Music unites people all over the world. This winter, Conrad Grebel University College is bringing people together virtually through the Noon Hour Concert series, starting January 26 at 12:30 pm. Additional concerts will premiere on most Wednesdays during the Winter term. These concerts are recorded with a small live audience and are broadcasted on the Grebel YouTube channel.

The University of Waterloo Music Department at Grebel spent the last month recording end-of-term ensemble concerts. Showcasing talent from two vocal groups, a string orchestra, a Balinese gamelan, a jazz band, and small instrumental chamber ensembles, these recordings are a musical treat for all. Participants include students from all faculties at UWaterloo, demonstrating the connection between science, technology, engineering, math, and arts!

Subhadra Vijaykumar, Sathish Venkatraman, & Dhishan Kandala

Toronto based award winning violinist Subhadra Vijaykumar brings the unique sounds of her Carnatic (South Indian classical) violin to the Chapel at Conrad Grebel. Subhadra will explain Carnatic Music and how the Carnatic violin, while being identical to the western violin, still differs from it.

Amelia Grace Yates, D.M.A., is a pianist, adjudicator, and instructor from Ancaster Ontario. A recent graduate of the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the University of Western Ontario, Dr. Yates’s research focusses on the solo piano music of Canadian composer Ann Southam. She is passionate about researching and performing the music of contemporary Canadian composers. In addition to performing as a soloist, Dr. Yates also enjoys collaborating with others in chamber groups and working with large ensembles and choirs.

"We will be presenting a recital of English songs and duets by British, Canadian, and American composers, including Vaughan Williams, Barber, Finzi, Larsen, Raminsh, and Weill. Since the partnership between poetry and music is so essential to art song, we wanted to return to our linguistic roots by presenting songs written in our mother tongue.

KW Symphony stand-mates Talia and Ian, supported by Guelph key and law expert Elliott, present music from a variety of eras, bass music and transcriptions, familiar and obscure. The audience will even discover how a group of French composers in the 19th century created their own “fake news”

This lovely music is worth listening to more than once. Although all three composers are considered 20th century musicians, the pieces contain a lyrical sense that is smooth and rich.

This concert has sadly been cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control. It will likely be rescheduled in a different term. You can see previous concerts by choosing past events in the search field.
