Before coming to UW, Dr. Paynter taught theory and aural skills at McMaster University, SUNY at Buffalo, Penn State University and the Crane School of Music (SUNY Potsdam). His courses dealt with diatonic and chromatic harmony, freshman and sophomore aural skills, form and analysis, modal and tonal counterpoint, Schenkerian analysis, 20th century theory, and the history of music theory. His research interests include the music of Morton Feldman (“Form and Process in Morton Feldman’s Spring of Chosroes,” in press, Music Analysis), musical space (“Three Dimensional Musical Space, Models and Metaphors for Analysis,” PhD dissertation), hierarchy in post-tonal music, and the use of metaphor in music theory discourse. Dr. Paynter is an accomplished pianist with extensive experience as a dance accompanist having worked with the touring companies of the National and Royal Winnipeg Ballets, the Scapino Ballet (Rotterdam), and the Hubbard Street Ballet (Chicago), and with the Toronto-based Ontario Ballet Theatre as well as a variety of professional and amateur schools.
