The Physics Tutorial Centre (PTC) provides a welcoming and supportive learning environment for students studying Physics at the University of Waterloo. Students enrolled in any Physics program — including Biological & Medical Physics, Materials & Nanosciences, Mathematical Physics, Physics, and Physics & Astronomy — can drop in during operating hours for free academic support in any course within their program, at any year of study. Students from other departments and faculties taking physics-based courses are also welcome!
The PTC offers support through upper-year student tutors, teaching assistants (TAs), and course instructors. Whether you're working through challenging concepts, preparing for assessments, or simply looking for a place to study and ask questions, we're here to help. Course-specific support varies by term depending on tutor availability, and instructors and TAs may also hold dedicated office hours or help sessions at the PTC.
We coordinate with the Science Learning Hub in STC 1019, which offers first-year students additional support with study skills, peer mentoring, and introductory Science courses (Earth, Biology, Chemistry, Science Communications).
Background
The Physics Tutorial Centre was started in Fall 2023 to establish a relaxed and accessible academic support hub for students. It is run by a small team of faculty, staff and co-op student(s) who manage a group of dedicated tutors with a wide range of backgrounds. These tutors primarily consist of fellow undergraduate student volunteers, complemented by professors and teaching assistants who contribute their time to assist students. This collaborative effort ensures a supportive environment where students can receive valuable academic guidance and connect with peers within their programs to foster a stronger sense of community within our Department.
