Wimshurst Machine

Photograph of a wimshurst machine

Apparatus:
self-contained

Description:
Two plexiglass contra-rotary disks with inlaid metal foil sectors which induce charges on each other, later picked off with metal brushes and stored in Leyden jars.
Separating the arms of the generator, on a dry day, results in impressive sparks.
To operate successfully, the disks should be turned such that the distance betwwen the diagonal brushes and the horizontal axis is minimized.
