Group Cohomology learning seminar

Ty Ghaswala, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

“Inspector Gadget’s Dilemma and Other Short Stories”

Inspector gadget’s dilemma, or as it’s more commonly known, the extension problem, is a central part of our quest to prove some of the group theory statements outl

Wednesday, September 18, 2013 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Algebra seminar

Nasir Sohail, Institute of Mathematics,University of Tartu, Estonia

“Representation extension and amalgamation in pomonoids”

I shall briefly discuss the history of the amalgamation problem for semigroups.

Wednesday, September 18, 2013 3:30 pm - 3:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Geometry & Topology seminar

Yunxia Chen, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Waterloo

"ADE bundles over complex surfaces"

(Affine) ADE bundles can be naturally constructed over (i) surfaces with simple singularities (ii) surfaces with singular elliptic curves in Kodaira's classification (iii) del Pezzo surfaces, ruled surfaces.... When the surface X is semi-Fano, then the deformability of the (Affine) ADE bundles can detect the geometry of X.

Please note room.

Thursday, September 19, 2013 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Algebraic Topology learning seminar

Janis Lazovskis, Department of Pure Math, University of Waterloo

“Introducing characteristic classes”

We will begin by introducing vector and tangent bundles, cohomology groups, and other background information to motivate characteristic classes.

Friday, September 20, 2013 3:30 pm - 3:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Analysis seminar

Alexey Popov, Department of Pure Math University of Waterloo

“On selfadjoint extensions of semigroups of partial isometries”

Let S be a semigroup of partial isometries acting on a complex, infinite-dimensional, sepa- rable Hilbert space.

Monday, September 23, 2013 4:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Pure Math colloquium

Volodymyr Mazorchuk, Uppsala University, Sweden

“Overview of higher representation theory”

Classical representation theory studies representations of algebras by linear operators. Higher representation theory is a recent upgrade which studies representations of 2-categories by functors and natural transformations.

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Kadison-Singer seminar

David Wagner, University of Waterloo

“The Kadison-Singer Problem III”

We overview the large-scale structure of the proof of Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava. In the process we introduce some of the main ideas: mixed determinants, real stable polynomials, and interlacing families. We prove a few of the elementary properties of these objects.

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 3:30 pm - 3:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Group Cohomology learning seminar

Robert Garbary, Department of Pure Math University of Waterloo

“More on free resolutions”

I’m going to tell you about the things that Ty told you I will tell you about.

Thursday, September 26, 2013 2:30 pm - 2:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Algebra seminar

Nasir Sohail, Institute of Mathematics, University of Tartu, Estonia

“Right congruence extension, flatness and amalgamation in pomonoids”

This will be a continuation of my previous talk.
