Senior Research Associate and Director of Laboratory Operations

 

We are hiring a Senior Research Associate and Director of Laboratory Operations at Northwestern University, reporting to Prof. Edward H. Sargent. The successful candidate will work closely with the PI and with research group members to ensure a productive, experimentally rigorous, and safe research environment.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Research facilitation:
    • Lead on grant applications to funding agencies and corporate partners. Prepare proposals for externally funded research and research infrastructure.
    • Mentor research group members, including PhD candidates and post-doctoral fellows, in the design of experiments enabling of the group’s research, and on their pursuit of scientific understanding and applied achievement via their experimental research activities. Advise students and PDFs as they prepare manuscripts and respond to peer review.
  • Safety and equipment: Manage the research group’s lab safety protocols and plans; ensure that they are followed by the team, and that best practices are continually updated and followed; all in concert with Northwestern safety authorities.
  • Equipment acquisition and maintenance: Select experimental systems for purchase; procure, set up, automate data flows and analysis; train team.
  • Scientific communication: lead the research group’s engagement and recruitment strategy, including website and social media.

 

Desired additional qualification: area of experimental research expertise: We prioritize candidates who have demonstrated prior experience in ultrafast laser systems, and/or operando spectroscopies of use to elaborate surface chemical processes at interfaces in at least  one of {optoelectronic devices such as solar cells, and electrocatalytic systems such as those used in CO2 and CO electroreduction}.

 

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field

Additional desired qualifications:

  • 1+ years postdoc experience;
  • Research experience in the field of ultrafast/Raman/FTIR/operando spectroscopy;
  • Demonstrated mentorship of PhD students and/or post-doctoral fellows in experimental research;
  • Prior success in research grant applications and/or corporate partnership development.
