Soulful Recitations: Celebrating Arabic Poetry in Canada

Participating Poets:

Zoukan Abdel Samad is a Lebanese Canadian poet celebrated for interweaving diverse cultural narratives in his work. He has produced a wealth of published works including 17 Arabic poetry collections and books. One of his best poems that he is going to recite on the event is “Terry Fox”.  

Ruba Shaban is a Palestinian poet and writer, born in Damascus, Syria and raised in the United Arab Emirates. She recently moved to Mississauga, Canada. Ruba is a member of the Emirates Writers Union. She participated in the Prince of Poets competition, Season II in 2008. Her publications include two poetry collections.

Hassan Ali Alnajjar, an accomplished Emirati poet and scholar, holds a doctorate in Arabic Language and Literature from the University of Sharjah. He has authored four poetry collections.

Ahmad Bourini is a Jordanian-Palestinian-Canadian poet and writer.  He has authored works in the fields of education, comparative linguistics, literature, and poetry. Notably, he chaired the Arab Canadian Forum for Cultural Dialogue. His poetic talent shines through two collections, "Alike Things" and "She Keeps Asking".

Mohamad Rabah, a talented poet and writer from Lebanon. In 2005, Mohamad Rabah, in collaboration with his close friend Ridwan, co-founded Poetry Nights, a platform that continues to illuminate the world of poetry with its enduring legacy. He authored five poetry collections.

Dr. Karen Houle is a recently retired Philosophy professor from the University of Guelph, as well as a poet and activist. Houle has authored three books of poetry and three books in the field of philosophy.

Nazar Aljubury, is a distinguished poet born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1956.  He holds a doctorate in Engineering. His poetic journey began at age 12 when he composed his first poem, showcasing his innate talent in a poetry festival in Iraq. He wrote poetry for over five decades. He has participated in poetry events and festivals in Iraq, across the Middle East, and in Canada.
