Women's History Month: Gail Cuthbert Brandt
From residence student to Renison’s first woman principal, Gail Cuthbert Brandt’s connection to the College spans more than six decades.
Gail Cuthbert Brandt’s story at Renison began in 1963, when she registered for an Arts degree in History through the College. She lived in residence for three years, serving as a don in her third year. Nearly three decades later, she returned to lead the community she had once called home.
When Gail became Principal in 1992, she made history as Renison’s first woman principal and the first woman Head of College at the University of Waterloo. She served as Principal and Vice-Chancellor until 2002, adding a decade of leadership to an already deeply personal connection with Renison.
Her leadership also extended internationally. As the first woman to chair Colleges and Universities of the Anglican Communion, Gail helped establish many international ties for Renison through the organization, connecting the College with a wider community of institutions.
Alongside these milestones, Gail built a career studying and sharing women’s history. A specialist in Canadian social and women’s history, her research has explored women’s working lives and rural communities. She is a co-author of Canadian Women: A History and Feminist Politics on the Farm. Her book Through the Mill examines the experiences of girls and women working in Quebec’s cotton industry.
Gail also turned her historian’s attention to Renison itself. In Bold and Courageous Dreams: A History of Renison University College, she documented the institution’s development and the people who shaped it.
For Women’s History Month, Gail’s story brings together two significant contributions: advancing women’s leadership in higher education and ensuring women’s experiences are part of the historical record. At Renison, that legacy is rooted in a relationship that began with a student arriving to study history, who would later return to make it.
