A trailblazer in academic leadership, scholarship, and intercultural understanding, Renison's former President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Wendy Fletcher, continues to inspire through her commitment to education, inclusion, and community.
Throughout her distinguished career as an educator, scholar, artist, and academic leader, Dr. Wendy Fletcher has championed the importance of education, inclusion, and understanding across cultures.
Serving as President and Vice-Chancellor of Renison University College from 2014 to 2024, Dr. Fletcher guided the College through a decade of significant growth and transformation. Her leadership strengthened Renison's academic programs, expanded international education opportunities, and fostered a more supportive environment for students, faculty, and researchers.
During her tenure, Dr. Fletcher oversaw the development of two strategic plans, guided the College through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and championed teaching excellence, reconciliation, anti-racism, and equity, diversity, and inclusion. Her commitment to collaborative leadership helped shape Renison into the institution it is today.
In recognition of her exceptional contributions, Dr. Fletcher was honoured with the title of President Emerita at Renison's 2026 Founders' Day celebration. Bestowed by the College's Board of Governors, this rare and prestigious distinction recognizes individuals whose extraordinary leadership and service have made a lasting impact on Renison.
Before joining Renison, Dr. Fletcher served as Dean and later Principal of Vancouver School of Theology for 14 years, following 11 years of teaching and scholarship at Huron University College. Her academic work has explored the history of race and racism in Canada, Indigenous experiences of colonization, and the role of women in religious leadership.
An accomplished author and researcher, Dr. Fletcher has published extensively on religion, culture, race, and belonging. Having travelled to more than 40 countries as a speaker, researcher, and educational leader, she has dedicated much of her career to fostering dialogue and understanding across cultural and religious differences.
Beyond academia, Dr. Fletcher is also a talented visual artist whose work explores connections between Confucian, Western, and Indigenous cultures, inviting conversations about identity, belonging, and our shared humanity. She continues her academic work at Renison as a Professor of Religious Studies and History and Director of the Centre for Interreligious Spirituality and Wisdom Practices.
As Renison celebrates Women's History Month, we recognize Dr. Fletcher not only for her remarkable achievements, but also for the example she has set as a woman in academic leadership. Her legacy continues to inspire a commitment to education, collaboration, and building a more inclusive and connected world.
