Mitacs Accelerate Award with Mantle314: Climate-related disclosure best practices
In fall 2020, David Billedeau and Adeboye Oyegunle, both PhD students in the Sustainability Management program, completed a placement with Manifest Climate. This Toronto-based consultancy firm offers guidance in moving towards climate-related
financial disclosure best practices. The work included reviewing corporate disclosures from international firms to support a sector-based benchmarking tool that compares both climate transparency and efficiency of operations. The pair worked on the strategic direction of Manifest Climate by articulating climate-related disclosure best practices pertaining to governance, risk management, strategy, metrics/targets, and overall external climate-related reporting practices.

Mitacs Globalink Research Award at Technical University of Denmark: Method development for measuring food waste in Canadian households
Sohani Withanage, a Sustainability Management PhD student, received a Mitacs Globalink Research award which allowed her to visit a foreign university for 12 weeks in fall 2019 for research purposes. Sohani’s master's research focused on the amounts and composition of household food waste in the Region of Waterloo. She utilized the Mitacs award to visit the Technical University of Denmark to develop methods with their much-experienced solid waste research group. During her time abroad she worked with a host supervisor and several masters and Ph.D. students in his research group, learning about the similar research they have conducted in Denmark and developing a comprehensive research design for her own research. She was able to visit waste collection and sorting facilities in Copenhagen and gain hands-on experience in municipal waste audits.

Mitacs Accelerate Award: Climate Finance and Youth Unemployment for COVID 19 Recovery
Muhammad Koya, a Masters student in Sustainability Management, received a Mitacs Accelerate award to explore how youth employment and climate action were considered in COVID-19 responses. The study partnered with Youth Climate Lab, a Canada-based, global non-profit organization that accelerates youth-led climate policy, projects and businesses. With a main objective of addressing youth unemployment in recovery packages, the research included a quantitative and qualitative research methodology to develop policy recommendations for economic recovery policymaking. Muhammad learned about policymaking, economic recovery, climate finance, and youth unemployment.

Mitacs Accelerate Award: Nature-based outdoor recreation ROE framework
Nicholas Palaschuk, a PhD student in Sustainability Management, received a Mitacs Accelerate award to pursue research with private industry partners. Nicholas worked alongside co-supervisor, Prof. Jeffrey Wilson, and with the leadership of Canada’s Health & Fitness Institute. He conducted research on the nexus between changing work environments and employee well-being. Not only did his experience help create functional linkages between research and practice, it helped him better understand the nuances of translating academic research to industry settings.
