Hi everyone! We are the meals and logistics team for the Spring 2023 International Study Course trip. Our team consists of Munrina, Tommy, Julianna, and Simerjot. As part of the meals and logistics team, our objective is to ensure that the trip runs smoothly and safely as we travel across Indonesia.
1. What new skills and knowledge have you gained from participating in the International Study Trip?
Munrina, second-year Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) student:
Regarding skills that I have developed, I have strengthened my leadership skills by taking on the role of team captain. This role involves being a point of contact between the team members, the professor, and the teaching assistants (TAs), as well as scheduling meetings and setting up the agenda for each class. This specific role has helped me develop my time management and interpersonal skills, mainly because it is my responsibility to deliver information from both the team members and the TAs to be an effective team captain.
Tommy, third-year AFM student:
From participating in the course, especially being on the meals and logistics team, I’ve been able to enhance my problem-solving skills. This trip in specific was the first time where students will be traveling to multiple countries. As such, more responsibilities have been put on the team such as coordinating and booking flights and accommodations. Moreover, this is the first trip where students are travelling to emerging economies, which comes with its own set of benefits and challenges. This requires us to further develop our creativity skills by coming up with solutions to new problems.
2. How do you see learning outcomes from the course being beneficial to you in your future academic and co-op terms, as well as career-wise?
Julianna, second-year AFM student:
While it is one thing to learn about theory from textbooks and current events from Twitter, it is experiences like this that allow us to gain a wider perspective on the world around us and the possibilities within it. Not only will the skills we use to plan this trip be beneficial later on in our lives, but it also provides the perfect opportunity to learn about the various jobs in the business, finance, and accounting fields, and hear from business professionals who were once in our shoes.
Simerjot, fourth-year AFM student:
I see the learning outcomes from the course being beneficial by providing me with a different perspective on the business world and how it functions. Every country has different traditions and cultural norms for how they conduct business, and this has allowed me to gain a new perspective and understanding of how the business world functions similarly and differently to North America. The course provides an excellent opportunity to expand my network and knowledge about different industries, business traditions, and jobs, as well as build on my core skills.
Stay tuned for an update on our travels to Indonesia!
