Biography

Ellen MacEachen is a Professor and Director in the School of Public Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo. Her research examines vulnerable workers, precarious employment, and the changing nature of work. Her studies have considered work in temporary employment agencies, digital platforms, and low wage workplaces within the broader context of shifting global economic and technological environments. She is particularly interested in international work disability policy. Her edited book, The Science and Politics of Work Disability Prevention, provides an international picture of social security systems, work and health.

In 2022, MacEachen was awarded an honorary doctorate by Mid-Sweden University for her outstanding contributions in research and education related to the complex relationships between individuals' health and well-being and the broader context of working life and societal welfare. MacEachen works closely with policymakers and community stakeholders, including injured worker advocacy groups. She sits on the Labour Market Information Expert Panel for the Labour Market Information Council of Canada, a federal advisory committee that provides independent advice on labour market policy and practice.

She is an International Advisor for Sweden’s FORTE research group focused on challenges of and for an inclusive Swedish labor market. She is past president of the Canadian Association for Research on Work and Health.

Ellen competed a BA in Sociology and Anthropology from Concordia University, a MSc in Rehabilitation Sciences from Queen’s University, and a PhD in Public Health Sciences from the University of Toronto.
