Biography

Jack deGooyer is an MASc student in the Quantum Information program at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is a member of Waterloo’s Institute for Quantum Computing, Quantum-Nano Fabrication and Characterization Facility, and the University Senate. His research is focused on the design of ophthalmological biomedical imaging systems that leverage metamaterials, avalanche photodetectors, and other quantum sensing technologies. He also works on special topics in Dr. Reimer’s Quantum Photonic Devices laboratory in designing and standardizing photonic circuits for quantum computing.

Prior to joining UWaterloo, Jack attained his B.Eng in Electrical Engineering from Dalhousie University where he served as Vice President of its engineering society and President of his residence. Outside school he is a parliamentary debate coach and hockey player with over a decade of competitive experience in each.

Professionally, Jack has worked in laboratory automation and R&D for Tesla and TRIUMF. He is chair of the 2023 Canadian Quantum Graduate Conference, has spoken at hackathons and high-school classrooms on quantum technologies, and volunteers for the Schulich Foundation. Jack has been a member of the Board of Governors at the University of Waterloo since 2022. 

Jack completed his B.Eng in Electrical Engineering from Dalhousie University and is currently completing his MASc in Quantum Information from the University of Waterloo.
