Originally from Chatham, Ontario, Rick completed a doctorate in political science at the University of Toronto. His first post was teaching at St. Thomas University, a small undergraduate institution in Fredericton known for its great community spirit. Rick eventually became the Vice-President (Academic) at St. Thomas and held that post for seven years. He moved to Sault Ste. Marie in 2010 to become President of Algoma University, which has a large population of Indigenous students and a strong Indigenous identity. After a five-year term at Algoma, Rick joined St. Paul’s (now United College) in 2016. Rick is co-author of a popular political science textbook from the University of Toronto Press that is in use at more than twenty-five colleges and universities.
