Academic Support Centre

Are you stressed? Make the move from stressed to success.

Services

Our services include:

  • learning management workshops;
  • individualized academic supports;
  • cultural teachings workshops and lectures; and
  • Elders-in-Residence.

We offer a complete range of academic support specially designed to help Aboriginal students excel in their post-secondary program. Every student will receive a personal and confidential assessment with the Aboriginal Academic Support Centre (ASC) Coordinator.

This staff member will then create and implement a unique set of strategies to ensure each student is provided with the right kind of support. This may include arranging individual meetings with a member of our mentoring team made up of:

  • elders who are active in the community,
  • senior students, and
  • University of Waterloo alumni;

and running workshops designed to provide you with academic and life skills that will help you succeed in university and beyond.

We can also help you with course selections and planning for the completion of your degree in a timely manner.

We're here to help in all aspects of your post-secondary experience so ASC us!

For more information or to register for an upcoming workshop, please contact Michelle Thomas.

Workshops

The Academic Support Centre creates and runs student success workshops for all University of Waterloo students. These sessions provide you with a new set of skills, handouts, and strategies designed to help you succeed. Space is limited to the first 10 students who sign up to ensure that there is personalized support for each individual.

Anyone interested in attending a workshop needs to register with the Waterloo Aboriginal Education Centre.

* Note: Workshops are not being offered in the Winter 2012 semester.

Mentoring

Mentoring creates a personal relationship with someone who has experienced a new educational setting, and who is a little more experienced in this setting, who will act as a guide to post-secondary life. Our mentors are available to provide community-based support, both in terms of providing a cultural link to the Aboriginal culture and community, as well as to the University of Waterloo in terms of academic success and discovering potential career paths. The mentors are here to support students in a successful transition to university studies and connect the students at the University of Waterloo to the Aboriginal communities in the area.

The mentors are volunteers from the community and consist of:

  • elders,
  • University of Waterloo alumni, and
  • senior students.

Each mentor goes through an evaluation process to ensure that they are positive and knowledgeable individuals. The roll of all the mentors is to listen, guide, encourage, empower, provide ties to the Aboriginal community, provides support, and much more.

If you are interested in speaking with a mentor, or if you would like to become a mentor, please contact us.

Elders Round Table

The Elders Round Table will be a series of culturally relevant workshops to teach, inform, and provide resources to anyone who is interested in attending. All are welcome!

A detailed list of elders and their round table topics will be available soon!

Resource library

We are in the process creating the library, which will include a selection of academic resources and culturally relevant books. If there are any resources that you would like to see included, please let us know.
