At United College, student ideas don’t just stay in the classroom, they grow into movements, businesses, and community impact. That spirit was celebrated this past spring as alum

Alumni Award presentation

Trishala Pillai (BA '16)returned to the college to officially receive the Emerging Alumni Award in recognition of her leadership, innovation, and commitment to creating meaningful change.

Presented by Principal Richard Myers and GreenHouse Director Tania Del Matto, the award recognizes alumni whose achievements reflect United College’s mission of social innovation, leadership, and community impact.

For Trishala, the journey began at United College in 2015 when she joined GreenHouse, the College’s social impact incubator. What started as curiosity quickly evolved into action.

“I’m not sure GreenHouse was even ready for this force of energy,” joked Del Matto during the ceremony.

While studying at the University of Waterloo, Trishala founded Dialogue Xchange, a platform designed to bring together policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, and community members for open conversations around important social issues. Discussions explored topics including mental health, gender equity, and navigating failure, creating spaces where people felt heard, connected, and inspired.

Since graduating, Trishala has continued building community through storytelling, entrepreneurship, and mentorship. Her work has included moderating panels, mentoring emerging leaders, and producing Newcomer Rise Up, a 12-episode series highlighting the stories of refugee and immigrant entrepreneurs.

“What strikes me most is not just the accomplishments. It’s the intention behind all of it. Every project Trishala touches is rooted in genuine care for community, for equity, and for amplifying the voices of others,” Tania Del Matto

Reflecting on her experience at United College and the University of Waterloo, Trishala spoke about the lasting impact of being part of a community that encouraged leadership, creativity, and social impact.

“Waterloo is a really special place. It cultivates so much good in the world. Everywhere I go, it doesn’t seem to leave me,” Trishala added.

Stories like Trishala’s reflect what makes United College unique: a community where students are encouraged to explore big ideas, build meaningful connections, and create impact beyond campus.

Whether through leadership opportunities, entrepreneurial programs like GreenHouse, or a residence community that supports growth and belonging, United College helps students turn passion into purpose.
