A Living Tribute to Peter Frick: Tree Dedication at United College
by Davandra Earle, Communications Officer.
After more than three decades of dedicated service to the University of Waterloo and United College, Professor Peter Frick was honoured with a tree dedication ceremony recognizing his lasting contributions to the community.
On a sunny July morning, United College staff and some members of Dr. Frick’s family gathered for a quiet, heartfelt moment on the college grounds to celebrate his 35 years of impact as a teacher, mentor, and colleague.
The ceremony marked the planting of a tree in his name—a living tribute that will grow and flourish on the land, much like the influence he has had on generations of students.

With humility and good humour, Peter expressed his gratitude during the brief remarks, saying he was “glad this was being done in recognition of and not in memory of.” The comment, delivered with a smile, brought light laughter to the group and captured the spirit of the occasion: one of reflection, gratitude, and continued presence.
Principal Rick Myers shared a few words during the ceremony, noting:
“Peter’s contributions to this College over the past 35 years are immeasurable, not just through his academic work, but through the relationships he built, the students he supported, and the example he set for integrity and care. This tree is a small but meaningful symbol of deep and enduring roots.”
Peter Frick’s time at United College has left a lasting mark. Through this symbolic gesture, those roots are now echoed physically in the landscape, a reminder of a remarkable academic legacy and the relationships that have shaped our community.
