Job Description: Waterloo Indigenous Student Centre (WISC) Programming Coordinator

Grade: F ($51,050.39 - $63,812.98)

Job Summary:

The Programming Coordinator’s general responsibility is the planning and execution of programming such as soup lunches, cultural events, lectures and others as assigned. The Programming Coordinator also serves as host of the Centre on a day-to-day basis, welcoming students and ensuring that the Centre is functioning effectively to meet their needs. Finally, the Programming Coordinator maintains the WISC’s social media, under the direction of the WISC Director.

Job Status: Temporary, full-time

Reports to:  Director, Waterloo Indigenous Student Centre  

Job Tasks:

  • Plan and deliver assigned programs and events, including soup lunches, cultural activities and orientation
  • Provide support for major events such as the pow wow
  • Host students in the Centre on a day-to-day basis and ensure the Centre is functioning effectively to meet their needs
  • Monitor supply levels in terms of food, craft supplies and other items necessary to its operations
  • Manage booking of the WISC space and the Ceremonial Firegrounds
  • Maintain promotional aspects of WISC programs, Facebook/Instagram, in collaboration with the WISC Director and the College’s External Relations team
  • Develop and distribute WISC newsletters and mass emails
  • Maintain the WISC website, under the direction of the WISC Director
  • Provide referrals to appropriate services (eg., registration, financial aid, counselling services, health) both on campus and off campus
  • Provide direction to student assistants
  • Participate in campus consultations on Indigenous matters
  • Support UW Indigenous student recruitment initiatives when requested
  • Participate in the broader work and activities of the College

Job Qualifications:

  • A recent satisfactory Police Back Ground Check including vulnerable sector screening
  • Preference will be given to an Indigenous candidate with a strong connection to an Indigenous community
  • Work periodic evenings, weekends, and extended hours as required.

Education:

  • Post-secondary degree in a related program

Experience:

  • Experience with Indigenous student programming in a postsecondary setting
  • Experience working with university and high school students
  • Experience organizing and executing events or programs
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, knowledge keepers and/or Elders

Skills:

  • Knowledge of diverse Indigenous cultures and protocols
  • Knowledge of Indigenous learners’ needs
  • Communication – verbal, written and on electronic/social platforms
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines    
  • Able to work effectively in a team environment
  • Must be competent in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to facilitate group learning activities/workshops of teens
