Supporting Faculty to Calculate Their Academic Footprints
Abstract:
Faculty and graduate students are increasingly using citation counts for tenure and promotion documentation, grant applications, and to determine their h-index. A single source such as Web of Science or Google Scholar Citations provides only partial coverage of a researcher’s true citation counts. In response to requests from faculty to assist with gathering citation counts, we developed a process to find, collect, and manage citations of faculty publications from multiple research sources in order to ascertain current, robust, accurate citation counts and provide transparent proof of those citation counts. This process uses reference management software and search alerts to allow for long term tracking and currency. We have also an developed online guide of this process. You can teach this process to faculty and graduate students as part of your outreach activities. Our most receptive target audiences are graduate students and new faculty.
