AMATH 463/663: Fluid Mechanics

Offered every fall term.

Brief description:

AMATH 463/663 is an introductory course in fluid mechanics and is a continuation of the continuum mechanics course AMATH 361. The study of fluid mechanics requires a variety of mathematical techniques. We will make use of vector calculus, complex analysis and methods for solving ordinary and partial differential equations. Familiarity with these topics is essential and assumed knowledge.

Outline of topics:

  • Derive the equations of motion in a rotating frame (Chapters 1-4)
  • Vorticity Dynamics, Irrotational Flow, Aerofoil Theory (Chapters 5, 6, 15)
  • Water Waves (Chapter 7)
  • Laminar Flow and Boundary Layer Theory (Chapters 9,10)
  • Introduction to Turbulence (Chapter 13)
  • Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (Chapter 14)
