Background and bridging courses

Control Theory

Desired background: Undergraduate courses in ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, complex analysis, and some experience with scientific computation.

Opportunity to learn about the field: For students with no previous background in control theory, a bridging graduate course, AMATH 655 Control Theory, is taught each winter term.

Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems

Desired background: An undergraduate course in ordinary differential equations. Background in partial differential equations and/or dynamical systems is required for some projects.

Environmental and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

Desired background: Undergraduate courses in fluid dynamics and partial differential equations, and some experience with scientific computation.

Opportunity to learn about the field: For students with no previous background in fluid dynamics, a bridging graduate course, AMATH 663 Fluid Dynamics, is taught each fall term.

General Relativity and Cosmology

Desired background: An undergraduate course in general relativity.

Opportunity to learn about the field: For students with no previous background in general relativity, a bridging graduate course, AMATH 675 General Relativity, is taught each winter term.

Mathematics in Biology and Medicine

Desired background: An undergraduate course in ordinary differential equations and some experience with scientific computation and biology. Background in partial differential equations is required for some projects.

Quantum Theory

Desired background: An undergraduate course in quantum theory.

Opportunity to learn about the field: For students with only a limited knowledge of quantum theory, a bridging graduate course, AMATH 673 Quantum Mechanics, is taught each fall term.

Scientific Computation

Desired background: An undergraduate course in scientific computation.

Opportunity to learn about the field: An introductory graduate course, AMATH 741 Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations, is taught each winter term.
