Professor Emeritus Ian Stewart awarded honorary doctorate from the University of Waterloo

Monday, June 17, 2024

The University of Waterloo conferred an honorary Doctor of Mathematics on Dr. Ian Stewart at the Spring 2024 convocation ceremony. Stewart, an emeritus professor at the University of Warwick, is well known for his research in symmetry and bifurcations in nature but is perhaps even better known for his work in popularizing science. Stewart has published more than 120 books, most of which are in the popular science and science fiction genres, authored the monthly column "Mathematical Recreations” in Scientific American for more than a decade, and has made numerous radio and television broadcasts.

Stewart was unable to attend the ceremony in person but delivered his address by video. He also remotely presented some of his work in an Applied Math Distinguished Lecture titled “Synchronisation in Feedforward Networks.”
