Award opens door to co-op

Lenora Fleming knows how important the co-op experience can be. She watched how her daughter Charlotte's confidence soared during her first work term. But finding that first co-op job wasn't easy.
Biology Professor Josh Neufeld goes above and beyond for his students. His use of clickers, twitter, and art are pioneering. His Halloween costumes are legendary. It was no surprise, when the Centre for Extended Learning announced Josh Neufeld won the 2021 Award for Excellence in Online Teaching.
Past and present members of the Department of Biology are saddened to announce the passing of Professor Emeritus Colin Ivor Mayfield. He was with the University of Waterloo for more than three decades. Mayfield was one of Biology's pioneering faculty who helped establish microbiology as a strength of the University of Waterloo.

The Caribbean Canadian Association of Waterloo Region (CCAWR), in collaboration with members of the entrepreneurial ecosystem of Waterloo Region and Wellington County, has developed LiftOff, the region’s first and only Black-led incubator and accelerator program.

Congratulations to Professor Rebecca Rooney for being awarded the 2022 Faculty of Science Excellence in Science Research Awards! Other recipients are Professors Andrea Edginton (School of Pharmacy) and Anna Klinkova (Department of Chemistry).

Rachel Beaver first became interested in microbiology during her undergraduate degree at Waterloo, when taking Fundamentals of Microbiology, taught by Professor Josh Neufeld. She was inspired to continue along this path, completing three co-op terms, her undergraduate thesis, and master’s degree in the Neufeld lab.

Now pursuing her PhD in the same lab, Beaver is currently investigating the microbial impact on the safety of long-term underground storage sites for nuclear waste materials, known as deep geological repositories (DGRs).
