The Indigenous & Black Engineering Technology (IBET) Ph.D. project was a groundbreaking initiative launched in January 2021 to address systemic inequalities and create increased access to higher education for Black and Indigenous students in Canada.
The Department of Chemical Engineering is proud to announce the creation of a modular, open educational resource (Distillation Laboratory) for deep learning of chemical engineering concepts. This resource allows users of all levels to explore, simulate, learn, and test their knowledge at their own pace.
Iris Samputu, who was born and raised in Kenya, came to Canada in 2015 to pursue her BASc in Chemical Engineering and BSc in Biochemistry.
Congratulations to Chemical Engineering grad student Nikolai Burton for being awarded the David Johnson International Student Entrance Scholarship! Nikolai, a native of Barbados grew up on the island spending time with his family and playing football and cricket. Nikolai was selected for this award on the basis of academic excellence, and his academic achievements. He commented on being awarded this scholarship,
As our spotlight on Capstone 2022 continues, we’re delighted to highlight Team 24. Team members include Grace Thompson, Melina Papadakis, Lauren Valliere, and Cameron Douglas. Their project was titled Musqueam Fleet Electrification.
The competition was stiff at the 2022 Concept Pitch Competition. Twenty-two teams of University of Waterloo Students pitched their ideas at the Concept $5k semi-finals. Four teams won the coveted $5,000 prize! James Lowman, chemical engineering Ph.D. student, and his team, Cauchy Analytics were one of the big winners!

Our chemical engineering graduating class has exemplified resilience, determination, and true grit as they have navigated earning their degree during the pandemic. They persevered during two years of lockdowns, online learning, and virtual lab work to achieve their undergraduate degrees.
On Marth 28th, 2022 the Department of Chemical Engineering proudly displayed its Capstone Design Projects in-person for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
