Our department suffered a grievous loss on Wednesday January 8, 2020. Mansour Esnaashary Esfahani, one of our doctoral students, was onboard flight PS725 that crashed in Iran resulting in the tragic deaths of all those aboard. Our thoughts are with his family, his recent bride, Hanieh, and his friends. We mourn his passing.

Managing reservoirs for water quality, not just flood control, could be part of the solution to the growth of toxic algal blooms in the Great Lakes, especially Lake Erie, every summer. 

In a major study involving data from Canada and the United States, researchers at the University of Waterloo identified reservoirs on streams and rivers as sources of food for algae at the worst possible time.

Susan Tighe, a civil and environmental engineering professor, has been named a member of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) for her "exceptional contributions to engineering in Canada."

She will be formally inducted as an EIC member in April 2020 at the institute’s annual awards gala.

Last night the Waterloo CEE Staff/Faculty/Grad Student hockey team battled valiantly. However, youth ultimately triumphed and the 2A civil class team won a close fought 4-3 match. Thanks to all who participated and came to watch! The Staff/Faculty/Grad Student team is looking forward to a rematch, when the 2A class returns from coop in Spring 2020.

Encouraging students to consider a future in science

WATERLOO — Elementary students are handed a few wooden blocks and told to build an arch, supervised by university students.

The simple purpose is to teach them science. The deeper purpose is to build a future.

To meet the needs of rapid urbanization and technologically more complex cities, the University of Waterloo has launched the Urban Engineering initiative to bring more rigorously trained engineers into leadership positions to respond to urban challenges. Nadine Ibrahim, is the Turkstra Chair in Urban Engineering creating excitement around urban engineering among students, faculty and industry.

Congratulations to Laurent Gerin for winning the Outstanding Young Professional Award – Gold Prize (first place) at INALCO (International Aluminum Conference) 2019, which was held in Tokyo, Japan this last week. Laurent’s presentation was selected first out of 34 presentations by young professionals (under age 35) at the conference, which featured ~190 delegates from around the world. The topic of Laurent’s presentation was “Static and Fatigue Testing of Partial Penetration and Flare Bevel Groove Welds in Aluminum Structures”.

The University of Waterloo Steel Bridge Team was happy to receive and test its new Rebel EMP 215IC multi-process welding unit from ESAB earlier this month. This donation will significantly enhance the capabilities of the team to fabricate their bridge for the 2021 Canadian completion, to take place on London, ON early next year. This welding unit will allow the team to carry out their bridge fabrication using any one of a variety of welding processes, including stick, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW.
