Advancing research around the themes of water security, gender-based violence and neglected health and illness in vulnerable populations in Sub-Saharan Africa, Dr. Susan Elliott was elected by her peers for her outstanding scholarly achievements. This recognition by the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) is the highest honour in the Arts, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Sciences.  

Dr. Susan Elliott is a University Research Chair in Medical Geography and a professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management. She has also served in a number of senor administrative positions including Dean of Social Sciences (McMaster), Dean of Health Sciences (Waterloo), and Senior Research Fellow, United Nations University Institute for Environment and Health, where she remains an adjunct professor.

Her transdisciplinary work bridges science and policy through global partnerships. As part of the Geographies of Health in Place (GoHelP) lab, Elliott has supervised more than 50 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, fostering the next generation of scholars in global health and environmental research. She was recently recognized for her contributions to graduate training through a University of Waterloo Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision.

Elliott has authored or co-authored more than 250 peer-reviewed articles, in addition to books and book chapters, which have accumulated over 16,000 citations on Google Scholar. Her h-index of 68 reflects her research impact in global environment and health. She is also the founder and Co-editor-in-Chief of Wellbeing, Space and Society, and serves as the Editor in Chief for Social Science and Medicine.

Her current research addresses water security, gender-based, violence and neglected health and illness in vulnerable populations in Sub-Saharan Africa, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In 2022, Elliott was elected a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, where she helps shape strategic direction and advance its mission to improve lives across Africa through global health research, scientific collaborations, and integrated knowledge translation.

Dr. Elliott is one of six University of Waterloo researchers being inducted as a fellow and RSC College member this November. The RSC is Canada's national academy of distinguished Canadian scholars, humanists, scientists, and artists. The academy exists to promote Canadian research and scholarly accomplishment in both of Canada's official languages, advise governments, non-governmental organizations, and Canadians generally on matters of public interest, recognize academic and artistic excellence, and mentor young scholars and artists.

The Master of Economic Development Innovation Program equips its graduates with the knowledge, tools, and approaches to address contemporary economic development challenges in cities and communities across Canada and internationally. The one-year program ends with a capstone project, which includes the option of completing a four-month internship in the economic development field. This year, four MEDI students undertook an internship, including Ricky Zhao and Kellie Hettinga. Zhao completed his internship at the County of Perth as a Tourism Officer. Hettinga completed her internship with the City of Woodstock within the Economic Development department.

We are honoured to welcome Sir Andrew Steer as the 2025 TD Walter Bean Professor in Environment. This fall, he will join the Faculty of Environment to deliver two compelling lectures exploring how leaders, innovators, and citizens can rise to meet the world’s most urgent environmental challenges  for nature, our cities and for our shared future.
