Global tourism accounts for 8% of total worldwide greenhouse gas emissions, four times more than previously believed, new research says.

Some gases, including carbon dioxide and methane, trap heat in the atmosphere, producing a "greenhouse effect," and so make the planet warmer. The amount of greenhouse gases released by a particular activity is referred to as its "carbon footprint."

Congratulations to Geography and Aviation professor Dr. Suzanne Kearns, who recently launched her new book, Fundamentals of International Aviation, at the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre.

Newly published research from GEM prof Dr. Derek Robinson and former Master's student Andrei Balulescu shows how small businesses could make use of freely available data on public spending habits to make themselves competitive with much larger companies! Susan Elliott, from the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, has recently received funding for Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships.

The Department of Geography and Environmental Management is very pleased to announce that Amelia Snow is this year's recipient of the Canadian Association of Geographer's Award. This award is granted annually to the most outstanding students graduating in Geography honours/majors programmes at universities or colleges across Canada. Congratulations Amelia!

In collaboration with Dr. Johanna Wandel, Dr. Derek Robinson, Glenn Milner one of the (Department of Geography and Environmental Management's first Master’s of Climate Change students), and Christine Tu (TRCA) the group was awarded Mitacs funding to support Glenn in an 8 month internship working with the TRCA.

Aaron Thompson, a masters student in our department, was the winner of the Campbell Scientific Canada Award ($500) at the 71st Annual Eastern Snow Conference, held in North Carolina last week. This competitive award is presented to the author of a paper submitted by a Canadian student demonstrating the most innovative use of technology in the gathering of data.
