Sarah Burch, a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Sustainability Governance and Innovation, has been named a Recipient of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 TM for 2018. Burch’s research focuses on governing responses to climate change (both adaptation and mitigation) in urban spaces. She also explores triggers of transitions toward more sustainable development pathways. Currently, her work has focused on acknowledging the contributions towards sustainability made by small and medium businesses, and how to radically transform organizations to be significantly more sustainable.

Global tourism accounts for 8% of total worldwide greenhouse gas emissions, four times more than previously believed, new research says.

Some gases, including carbon dioxide and methane, trap heat in the atmosphere, producing a "greenhouse effect," and so make the planet warmer. The amount of greenhouse gases released by a particular activity is referred to as its "carbon footprint."

Congratulations to GEM students Juan Carrillo, Anam Rahman, Jaydeep Mistry, and Stephanie Wen (pictured in order) for finishing 1st runners-up in the recent Esri Canada Centre for Excellence (ECCE) App Challenge.

Congratulations to Dr. Suzanne Kearns, who was recently featured in an article published by the Waterloo Region Record. The article explores Dr. Kearns' path to becoming a professor of aviation at the University of Waterloo.

Congratulations to GEM students Nehal Kanetkar, Tanya Iljas, Vineet Virwani (pictured in order) on their winning proposal to L&B Consultants on aviation sustainability. This was through their participation in the GEOG 474 course on Sustainability in Aviation, taught by Dr. Suzanne Kearns.
