Earth Week 2021 written by Meghan Min Fen Wong

To wrap up this winter semester, the new Library Ambassadors, including myself, finally got to share the team project that we have been working on over this term. The theme that we chose to center our project on is Earth Week. With help from the Student Engagement team, we came up with daily events that could be accessed on the UW library page on Instagram. The goal of this project was to encourage students and others how they can show their support for protecting our environment. So in case you missed it, here’s a run-down of what happened during Earth Week!

Campus map with icons representing trees, flowers, wild animals, and indoor plantsFor one event, we planned a scavenger hunt on the Virtual Library Services Fair which accessed through the campus map on Google Maps. Since the scavenger hunt can’t be run in-person, you search by looking for icons that represent different types of trees, flowers, wild animals, and indoor plants. The goal was to search for 5 of each category on the map, some of them are tricky and are placed inside the “buildings” where you would normally find them rather than outdoors in the open.

Another project we created was in collaboration with the UW sustainability network. There are photos uploaded on our Instagram showing how items can be re-purposed than thrown away. The items are things that almost everyone has in their household such as, paper, candles, and books. There were also DIY videos uploaded each day to demonstrate one way each of the items could be reused for example; using coffee grounds as lip scrubs or using books as a new planter.

Art Contest instagram graphicWe also held an art contest where students could submit their writing pieces, drawings, dances, memes, and more for a chance to win a prize! The theme had to be “Protect the Earth” and it’s always exciting when we receive a submission! There was also a crossword puzzle with questions relating to Earth Day and some of the library resources, and if students submit their completed puzzle, they could win a prize. Lastly, we shared a reading list for anyone who wants to learn more about topics such as climate change, pollution, and other environmental sciences!

Overall, I hope that you were interested in any of our events and it can inspire you to learn more or take action towards environmental protection. If you participated in any of the events, I really hope you enjoyed it, since I had a great experience coming up with the ideas for Earth Week. In case you missed it, there are still posts and story highlights up on our Instagram, and you always have the chance to join in for future events.

Thanks for reading,

Meghan
