Management Sciences faculty, staff, students and alumni are mourning the passing of Phil Everson, a 2017 graduate of the Management Engineering program. Phil passed away shortly after completing the Army Run in Ottawa on Sunday, September 22, 2019. 

INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences) is the largest association in the field of operations research and analytics worldwide, which focuses on "scientific mathematical processes that enable organizations to turn complex challenges into substantial opportunities by transforming data into information, and information into insights that save lives, save money and solve problems".

Prof. Olga Vechtomova of the Department of Management Sciences, together with colleagues Charlie Clarke and Gordon Cormack from the Cheriton School of Computer Science as well as former graduate students, were recently awarded the 2019 ACM SIGIR Test of Time Award. The award acknowledged the impact of their paper titled Novelty and Diversity in Information Retrieval Evaluation. 

Former Management Sciences professor Ada Barlatt was recently featured in a Global News article on the effects of increased internet use among Canadians. Prof. Barlatt, who has founded a digital consulting company aimed at striking a work-life balance with technology - while also serving as an Adjunct Assistant Professor, weighed in on workplace pressures to stay connected and how they might be affecting work-life balance. 

The Management Science Spring Student Awards Reception took place on June 20, 2019, celebrating the outstanding achievements of undergraduate and graduate students.

Professor Mark Smucker, Associate Chair Undergraduate Studies, presented letters of congratulations and gift cards to Management Engineering students on the Dean’s Honour List, recognizing their academic excellence in the 2018-2019 academic year. The award recepients were:

The Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS) Annual Conference 2019 took place in Saskatoon, Canada, on May 27-29, 2019.  A number of Management Sciences faculty members and students attended the conference.  Their research was well-received and recognized at the conference.

Winners have been selected from the University's first virtual Industry 4.0 competition for secondary schools run by a team focused on promoting Waterloo’s management engineering program.

Team Conveyor Belt from Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School in Scarborough placed first, team Avo from St. Francis Xavier Secondary School in Mississauga came in second, and team BCSS1 from Bill Crothers Secondary School in Markham captured third in the one-day event held in February. 

A team of Management Engineering students at the University of Waterloo made the most of a second chance this week to become the big winners at an annual pitch contest for startups.

Thevany Narayanamoorthy, Dhruv Gupta, Garvita Rai, Rhea Philip and Sam Villaluz just missed the cut during a preliminary process to pick 15 finalists from over 50 applicants for the Norman Esch Entrepreneurship Awards for Capstone Design.

Originally built as a way to secure cryptocurrency transactions, blockchain is a digital platform that verifies and records exchanges. Blockchains are global networks that can have millions of users, each adding information or data that is secured through cryptography. This creates an indisputable history of these transactions that cannot be modified by a single user, eliminating opportunities for fraud, and it is this feature that has some heralding blockchain as a way of increasing cybersecurity.
