The University of Waterloo has named Jagdeep Sing Bachher as its 12^th chancellor. Dr. Bachher is chief investment officer and vice president of investments at the 10-campus University of California, where he oversees an investment portfolio of $164 billion. He is a double-alumnus of Management Science and Engineering, having earned both a Master of Applied Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in Management Sciences.

The Faculty Engineering introduces a new name for the Department of Management Science and Engineering after five-plus decades. 

Expanding upon its long legacy of excellence, the Department of Management Sciences at Waterloo Engineering has undergone an official name change to better encapsulate the unit’s distinctive, interdisciplinary approach to education within the engineering field.

Danielle Ripsman, a PhD student in Management Science and Engineering was recently featured in an interview by Waterloo News. Danielle explains her love of puzzles and how that led to doctoral studies in operations research, where she is using mathematical models to improve radiation therapy in cancer treatment. 

On July 19th, seven finalist teams pitched their business ideas for a chance at one of four Velocity $5,000 grants. One of the four finalist teams taking home a prize was Pragmatica, co-founded by 2023 Management Engineering graduates Karthik Prasad and Thomas Mastantuono.  Pragmatica is developing a VR speech therapy solution for people with communicative disorders to supplement or provide as an alternative for those who cannot access or afford a dedicated speech therapist.  

A management sciences undergraduate research project that explored optimization methods for radiotherapy treatment of cancer received the top prize in a national competition.

Management Engineering and Management Sciences graduating students participated in the Spring 2023 convocation, held on the evening of Saturday, June 17. The event celebrated the achievements of a new generation of graduates.

Two management engineering graduates received special recognition. Charles Yu received the University of Waterloo Alumni Gold Medal, as well as a Sandford Fleming Foundation Medal for Co-operative Work Term Proficiency. Julian Curalli won a Sandford Fleming Foundation Medal in Academic Excellence.

Stefan Zivkovic, a third-year Management Engineering student shares his co-op experiences and how he went from a web developer to stock trading in two years.

Fifteen management engineering capstone design projects were recently showcased at the 2023 Management Engineering Capstone Design Symposium. Students identified and tackled emerging problems in a range of domains and industries including healthcare, social services, human resources, lifestyle, and education. Their innovative and impactful solutions offer critical process improvements and decision support tools to serve individual and institutional stakeholders.

Shelley Vossen, undergraduate advisor/co-ordinator in the Department of Management Sciences, was the recepient of a 2022 Faculty of Engineering Outstanding Staff Performance Award. The award recognizes staff who make outstanding contributions to the learning and working environment in the Faculty of Engineering. 

Management Sciences professor Saeed Ghadimi has been recognized by an international organization for work involving the interface between computer science and operations research. He shared an annual prize from the INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) Computing Society (ICS) for the best paper or group of papers in the field.
