On March 17, 2018,  over 40 high school students from the Waterloo Region tested their math skills and learned more about the field of operations research at the The Operations Research Challenge (TORCH). The competition was jointly organized by volunteer graduate students in the Department of Management Sciences in the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization in the Faculty of Math.

A group of Engineering graduate students won first prize in the Wideman Education Awards, Ontario competition, which promotes socially oriented project work. Taru Agarwal, Diana Jaber, Jithin John Matthews, Rafat Tahboosh, Jing Wu, and Alizeh Zaman completed the project as part of a Management Sciences course - MSCI 651 - International Project Management, instructed by Prof. Peter Carr.

For two Waterloo Engineering students, their experience with FIRST Robotics in high school was the catalyst to their enrolling in the Management Engineering program.

Jordan Grant, 21, and Rebecca Rayner, 22, are in their third and fourth year of Waterloo’s Management Engineering program respectively.

Their career interests and paths were very different, but they both found exactly what they wanted in Management Engineering.

The 2018 Management Engineering Design Symposium was held on Friday, March 16. Eleven teams of 4th year management engineering students showcased their innovative designs. The event was very well attended, with all projects evaluated by a number of professors, graduate students, and management engineering alumni. In addition, projects were also evaluated by all other visitors, who helped select the People's Choice Award.

Fourth year management engineering students Stefanno Da Silva, Shivam Sharma, Tara Tsang, and Julie Yu placed third at the 2018 Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC) in the Innovative Design category. This year OEC was held at the University of Ottawa from January 26 - 28. Their project is to develop a group trip planning application and is supervised by Professor Stan Dimitrov.

Cynthia Waltho, a PhD candidate in Management Sciences, was recently featured in a video highlighting what it's like to be a graduate student at the University of Waterloo.

Management Sciences professor Sibel Alumur Alev was recently awarded the Charles ReVelle Rising Star award at the 2017 INFORMS annual meeting in Houston, Texas.

The prestigious Rising Star award is awarded every two years to a person "who has made significant contribution to location analysis research and displays the potential to continue to do so."  Professor Alumur Alev was recognized for her research excellence in hub network design, reverse logistics, and supply chain network design.

On October 3, 2017, five 1979 graduates of the Management Sciences Master's program - Patrick Abbott, Kent Hippolyte, Harald Mayer, Jorge Medina, and Stuart Stark -  visited the department and met with current professors as well as graduate and undergraduate students.

The five alumni learned about new department programs and offerings  and shared experiences from their long and distinguished international careers in the United States, Europe, Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean. 

Jagdeep Bachher, a Management Sciences alumnus was recently featured on Bloomberg Businessweek. Since 2014, he has led the University of California's $100 billion pension and endowment fund as its chief investment officer (CIO).
