Mechatronics students win awards for innovative Capstone Design projects at the 2026 Esch Pitch Competition

Every year, students across engineering, including those in MME, culminate their program with a Capstone Design project to develop innovative ideas to advance an area of interest. Students also have the opportunity to take part in the Norman Esch Entrepreneurship Awards for Capstone Design, open to a broad audience, with the chance to win their share of $100,000 in prize money.

Students from our mechatronics programs participated and delivered successful 3-minute pitches to a large audience and industry judges.

Teams won $12,000 or $5,000 prizes:

L.I.D.D.E. Loupes - $12,000

This team has created medical loupes that help ease nasal, back, and neck pain in doctors and practitioners, which are typically caused by traditional surgical and dental loupes. This helps ensure that medical professionals are comfortable and able to continue practicing their careers pain-free.

PneuBra - $12,000

62 per cent of women experience pain and breathing difficulties during physical activity, which can become a barrier to women participating in sports. The team has developed a pneumatic sports bra with adjustable support to address pain and breathing difficulties.

Congratulations to the mechatronics engineering groups and to all engineering students who participated! Read more in Students win more than $100,000 at Capstone Design pitch contest in Waterloo News.
