Connecting Through Music at OMMC
Before attending Ontario Mennonite Music Camp (OMMC) at Conrad Grebel University College in Waterloo, campers Julia and Jaren thought the idea of making close friends there seemed too good to be true. Little did they know, they were entering an environment where friendship and music come together to create a sense of belonging for everyone, no matter their age or musical experience.
During Jaren’s first week at camp, he enjoyed participating in fun activities with new people. “I was so lost in this amazing world that I’d only just found out about. I had no idea how much the people at this camp would impact my life. I’d barely known them for a week and yet I felt like I’d known them forever. The part that struck me the most was the sense of inclusion I felt among everyone there,” he shared.

For Julia, she decided to see what OMMC was like for herself after hearing about the exciting times her friends had there. One of her favourite parts of camp was having conversations over meals with campers of all ages. “No matter who I was with at OMMC, I always felt I belonged. I really enjoyed our small group because I got to know those people better. We also had time to reflect on Bible verses and how camp was going so far. We had Chapel every morning, and it was always very early, but I loved singing with people,” said Julia.
Whether reading Bible verses or learning new choral music, Julia had something in common with Jaren, who could often be found playing games or jamming with other musicians: building friendships founded in music and community. “OMMC is where I found some of my greatest friends; my people. The people that let me be me,” Jaren said.
At OMMC, youth ages 12 to 17 who have completed grades six to twelve and are interested in singing and playing instruments explore music together in ensembles and workshops. On the last day of camp, campers perform in their ensembles and present a musical in front of an audience which includes their parents. Other exciting camp activities include recreation games, volleyball, campfires, silly theme days, and more! All musical backgrounds are welcome.
Julia and Jaren encourage those interested in music to experience OMMC for themselves. “After all, there's not many places where you get live music while trying to take a shower,” he said.
