Professional and student: Public health education and practice collide

Julia Man (MPH ’15) thrives on the challenge of applying public health principles to tackle complex issues. In her time with organizations like the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and the Ministry of Health, she has explored health issues from a variety of perspectives. Julia also worked within the health and justice portfolio as an Audit Supervisor with the Office of the Auditor General and has recently joined the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario.

In her previous work as an auditor, Julia conducted large-scale program evaluations to assess the efficacy and financial performance of government programs and activities. For example, while auditing the death investigation system in Ontario, Julia determined an opportunity to utilize data to facilitate a greater understanding of the determinants of premature death. With these findings, recommendations were made for system improvements that could enhance preventative health measures to improve public safety and prevent premature deaths. Following her audit, Julia decided to continue this important work and transitioned into her current role with the Office of the Chief Coroner.

As a professional, Julia is passionate about continued learning. She chose the Master of Public Health (MPH) program at the University of Waterloo because it allowed her the flexibility to complete her degree while working full time. During her studies, Julia often found herself applying the concepts she learned in her online classroom to her professional projects. For example, she was studying the importance of infection prevention and control while developing policies for private health clinics.

Now a few years out of the program, Julia still connects with three of her MPH friends every day. Looking forward, she is ready to embark on the next step of her educational and professional journey and will start her Master of Law this fall.

Julia’s passion and expertise have allowed her to make a mark on the health sector. Her ongoing drive for professional and educational growth will continue to foster a rewarding and impactful career.

Julia’s advice to others: To be happy, you must grow both professionally and personally. It is easy to stay in any position in your life - which is fine if you are happy. If you are not, seek to learn new things. You may be surprised of the possibilities!
