Norman Bethune was a Canadian physician who travelled to China and participated in the second Sino-Japanese War. He arrived in China in January 1938 and joined Mao Zedong in his fight against the Japanese invaders. While in China, he performed battlefield surgical operations and trained other medical professionals as well. Unfortunately, he contracted blood poisoning and died in November 1939.
